Hut to Hut Hiking in the Dolomites, Italy
My family did a 5 day, 4 night hut to hut hike this past July in the Dolomites. I have had a lot of questions about it so will do a real shallow dive into logistics and my thoughts.
90% of my route was based on someone else’s itinerary. Even with that, I worked with an adviser in Italy to make sure it all made sense.
Hut to hut hiking is unfortunately very complicated. There are a ton of routes, areas, refuges (huts) and trails of varying levels. I was very concerned with making sure the hikes wouldn’t be too difficult for my kids but still interesting and make sense. It will require (unfortunately) a lot of planning.
If you are simply doing day trips from a base, it will be a lot easier (plus if it rains you can stay in!) but the hikes will perhaps be less spectacular and busier.
In our experience, all the routes accessible by day hikers were very busy. And we were nowhere near the Tre Cime/Alta Via you see online all the time, which I imagine is even busier.
It’s important to know that huts book up months in advance. We booked our huts in December. Some weekends book up in Oct/Nov. Plus it’s complicated - if one hut isn’t available it has a knock on effect. That’s why it’s best to do it as early as possible
Having said that - it is truly spectacular and a definite highlight of the summer/my life. The scenery is unreal, varied and stunning. The huts are gorgeous and the food is wonderful. It all felt very very *special*. I encourage you to look into it if you think it is something you may be interested in!
Happy hiking!

Not A Cheesecake
I made this yoghurt cake recently and I’m not going to lie my family had mixed reviews. The one comment was that it was ‘wet’. But with the cake being mostly yoghurt and eggs, I’m going to recommend it as a high protein cheesecake alternative. I used Siggis yoghurt (which is very thick) and 4 tbsp of flour as recommended in the recipe comments. If you refrigerate it, it firms up quite substantially. I definitely had it as a snack instead of my usual cottage cheese/banana.
Craft Studio near Vendome Metro
How’s that for a clear title?
I discovered there’s a crafty little studio offering all sorts of courses right by the Vendome metro. I just found it and have yet to go but it looks like a fun way to hang out with friends/make some new ones. It looks like one day it will also be a craft café? TBD! You can see more here.
