Let's Do This
Day trips: Hiking at Val David
I did a survey a while back about content you’d like to see on this newsletter and day trips were a big winner. Fall is the perfect hiking season - the colours are out and the days are cooler. However, sometimes it’s hard to know exactly where to go.
My husband semi grew up in the Laurentian's and we’ve gone many times to Val David to hike.
Details
Location: Parc régional de Val-David-Val-Morin
Parking: There is a free parking lot. By the time we left at 11:30 it was full and people were parking down the street or waiting in their car for spots.
Facilities: There are flushing toilets and port-a-potties on site.
Cost: There is a fee and you wear an old-school ski pass style tag to show you’ve paid.
Popularity: Very - it’s no ‘Everest at the peak of climbing season’ but you will definitely meet others on the paths and at the viewpoints.
Difficulty: There are many different paths with varying difficulty, but I mean you are gaining altitude to get any sort of view so be prepared for climbing and steps. Having said that there are ALL ages on the trails from toddlers to seniors. The day we went there was someone providing advice for the different paths, but there are maps. It is somewhat easy to get lost just because there are so many paths - but if you watch where you are going it is also very well sign posted. My guess is the Mt Condor is the most popular hike (it’s also pretty short). The area is also popular with boulder climbers.
Enjoy!
ps My husband and kiddos did this hike on Mont Kaaikop and loved it!
A few books/Chunky Necklaces
I was debating what to write about for this portion so just decided to combine a few things I’m loving lately:
String Pendant from Deux Lions
Stylist to the stars (and my clients) & my friend, Amanda Eaman, was wearing this lovely necklace.
Estelle Rope Necklace from Jenny Bird
Books I’ve been loving (that I randomly selected from the library)
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
Pasta Pooks

Pasta Pooks is a delicious pasta restaurant in Little Italy that you should definitely try! Right now it is a small takeaway counter with seating consisting of an outside terrace (around the corner) or countertop seats along the window. They are in the process of opening a dining room next door. On the day we went there was 3 pastas, 1 sandwich and a selection of appetizers. The pastas were excellent and the sandwich was huge (definitely share the sandwich). Appetizers were also great.
Elena Pizzeria, from the folks behind Elena, will be opening very soon at 1169 rue Ottawa, in Griffintown. Yay for this opening!
Do you miss having a landline for your kiddos? I know I do! I love the idea of this phone! Have any of you tried it yet? I still can’t figure out if it would work in Canada.
& Juliet is coming to Place des Arts - it looks like it would be a fun one for kids & really any musical fan. Moulin Rouge and The Lion King will also be on sale soon.
Friendly reminders - get on those halloween costumes, and pull out last years winter boots, snow pants and winter jackets to see if they fit. You don’t want to get caught in a snowstorm with boots that don’t fit your kid anymore. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer… but Winter Is Coming.
Jonny Greenwood, from Radiohead, did the entire soundtrack to One Battle After Another. I haven’t seen it yet, but I already know we’ll be seeing a ton of ‘Bob’s’ at halloween.
Bon Iver’s latest video is pretty joyful (and includes Cristin Milioti)
I really don’t know how I didn’t know about this place, but there is a new cookie store on Ste-Catherine between Metcalfe and Kensington in that strip of stores with the green awning (IYKYK).
WHOOPS - ALMOST DONE: Please remember that while you may receive Three Good Things to Know as an e-mail, all issues of the newsletter are available in the archive.
ALSO, HMMM: Do you follow me on Instagram? I’d love to see you there.
LASTLY - PRETTY PLEASE: It would mean the world to me if you shared 3 Good Things with friends and family. You can do so using the buttons below.
OKAY JUST JOKING REALLY LAST BUT REALLY IMPORTANT: Please don’t be shy to contribute. This could be a book you read, restaurant recommendation, event or someone really awesome I should get in touch with so they can share their knowledge or promote their business.
