Beautiful Books make a Beautiful Gift
I know a lot of you are into your electronic books, but to me there’s nothing better than an actually holding a book in your hands. Moving beyond that there’s something about art books that I just love and I think they make a great gift. I don’t think that they are something that we normally think to buy for ourselves, and you can find a topic niche enough to really personalize it.
Just a reminder that art books don’t have to be new. There are many second hand bookstores in Montreal that we can support that carry art books.
Two of my favourite publishers are Assouline (I’ve linked to Maison Lipari - a Montreal based store) and Hoxton Mini Press which I absolutely adore. I encourage you to order directly from Hoxton Mini Press. It may take a little longer, but it’s always nicer to order straight from the source.
On my list this year is Ruelles by Ariel Tart and Florence Sara G. Ferraris - It’s a beautifully photographed book on our wonderful Montreal alleys. Perfect for anyone who loves Montreal!
Discover Beyond Vancouver
Vancouver is one of the most visited cities in North America, and for good reason. You’ve got the mountains, ocean, palm trees and dense fir tree forests. There is hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, amazing nightlife, museums, restaurants, arts and culture.
Having visited Vancouver a handful of times in my early 20’s when it came time to decide on a new city to call home after traveling abroad I settled on Vancouver. With a milder climate than Montreal, and the mountains and the ocean, there was no better choice. During the years I lived there I tried my best to get out and explore as much as possible and these are a few of my favourite day trips I took often.
Vancouver boasts so much to do but if you have a little extra time and want to escape the city for a little something extra here are my 3 favourite day trips from Vancouver.
Joffre Lakes Provincial Park
Vancouver boasts incredible hiking and walking trails, but if you want to see something a little different, grab your pack, camera & hiking boots and head for Joffre Lake Provincial Park.
Just north of Whistler you’ll find the Gatorade coloured lakes you’ve only dreamed about. But no more dreaming for you - you’re about to be gifted with 3 of the most beautiful lakes British Columbia has to offer.
The site is accessible in most seasons - just be sure to check the parks website for any closures before heading out.
Getting a spot for this trail means waking up early, but I promise it’s worth it. If you are feeling adventurous, you can even hike out and camp at the top of a glacier on an overnight trip.
The track is a 10 km track with a couple of switchbacks. The views get infinitely better the higher you get. It starts off with the first lake only a few steps from the car park. The track continues upwards to lake #2, one of the most photographed lakes in Canada. The colour is sure to knock your socks off, and if you visit in the summer the glacial waters will be refreshing for tired feet so taking a dip is definitely recommended.
If you continue onwards you’ll find the top lake and even more stunning scenery.
If you have the time and the capabilities to turn the day trip into an overnight one I recommend setting up camp for the night at the Joffre Lake Campsite above the third lake.
Whistler
No matter the season, Whistler always has so much to offer.
In winter hit the slopes at Whistler Blackcomb with over 200 runs. If you’re visiting in the warmer months trade your ski/board for a bike and hit the trails.
If you prefer a chilled scenic option to experience Blackcomb, that’s not a problem. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola experience is one of a kind. Linking Whistler’s Roundhouse Lodge to the Rendezvous Lodge at Blackcomb you’ll be treated to some of the country’s most spectacular views.
Hikers should not miss the Train Wreck Trail at Jane Lake Road where you’ll be able to see the remnants of a train wreck from 1990 that have been turned into art. Lost Lake is perfect for a swim or a beautiful spot for a picnic, and Brandywine Falls are amazing no matter the season.
There is, of course, Whistler Village which was home to the 2010 Winter Olympics. It has a ton of restaurants and shopping, not to mention a few museums dedicated to the local history and Olympic adventures that took place a decade ago.
Bowen Island
Technically considered part of Metro Vancouver, this is a great day trip option for those who want to skip the car ride and opt for the ferry.
From Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal it’s a quick sail along the Howe Sound to Bowen Island, and the views are awesome en route so be sure to sit out on the deck. At only 12 km in length, the island might be considered small, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring. It’s perfect for hiking, being and water sports, with a great restaurant scene and even a yoga center. It has something for everyone.
For anyone travelling with small children or just looking for a leisurely walking option, head towards Killarney Lake Loop. The lake is shaded by massive fir trees around a gorgeous lake.
If you’re looking for a bit more of a challenge you can opt for hiking the 10km trail to the summit of Mt.Gardener. This is the island’s tallest mountain. Another option is Dorman Point. Both of these have incredible views from the top. Please note a car is required to access both trailheads.
At the ferry terminal on the pier, you’ll see tons of boats and while some may be out of your price range, there is a facility for renting kayaks and paddle boards to get out on the lake to explore the island from the sea. It’s nice to get a different point of view. Bonus points: if you take on a water spot you’ll be able to treat yourself at Branch & Butter the snack shop on the pier, which is perfect for post adventure tacos & ice cream.
If you need a place to extend your day trip to an overnight one check out Nectar Yoga Retreat Center and Bed & Breakfast. Classes are available for day trip visitors.

We’re almost there…
It’s almost slipper season (not to be confused with sweater weather which I believe comes earlier.) I have gone through about 4 pairs of these and still love them. Want something different? The New York Times rated these as the most durable, breathable and supportive pair of wool slippers they’ve ever tried. Let’s get cozy.
I have been SOOO busy I have not read anything. I’m just too tired at night. We have been watching as a family the Great British Baking Show which I have to say is just such a comfort show.
Café Olimipico is now open in Westmount on Victoria. The vibe is cozy and the snacks are delicious.
I’m going to be publishing gift lists from local businesses (hopefully!) If you know of a local business that would like to contribute please get in touch.
Flare corduroys are back! They are very very 90s me. What do you think?! Hate or love. I wish I still have a baby blue pair I loved (they were so low cut though lol…)
