Perfect Banana Bread - Link Available This Month Only!
There’s only one banana bread for me and it’s the NYT Famous Banana Bread - not the actual name but just what I call it. I don’t even bother to chop the nuts, stick it all in one bowl and it comes out perfect. I always put a leeeeetle less sugar and I love the fact that it uses 5 bananas.
This month in honour of their 10 year anniversary New York Times Cooking is allowing subscribers like myself to share as many gift recipes as we like. Anyone can read and save this recipe — no subscription needed. Get it while it’s live this September.
Squamish - The best BC town you may never have heard of (but you should)
Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) is located halfway between Vancouver and Whistler, where the Coast Mountains meet the mouth of Howe Sound, and yes, it is as magnificent as it sounds.
The town is part of the Sea-to-Sky Corridor, which is famous for its scenic beauty and offers some of the most picturesque drives in Canada. Imagine taking in gorgeous mountains, the majestic ocean, and jaw-dropping waterfalls. The awe-inspiring beauty hooked me in and I have returned for yearly trips since 2021.
While Squamish is renowned for its outdoor activities such as climbing, mountain biking and hiking, you do not need to be an adrenaline junkie to fall in love with this gorgeous town.
One of my favourite outdoor activities is taking in the breathtaking milky blue views of Howe Sound with minimal effort. This is an especially pleasant way to spend the day with a small child. All you have to do is hop onto the Sea to Sky Gondola and you’ll be whisked to the top. Spend the day up the mountain exploring easy trails, getting in a morning yoga session with unbeatable views, and crossing the suspended bridge. You even can join in one of the numerous community events hosted at the top of the mountain. There’s everything from live concerts to happy hours!
One of my favorite things about Squamish is that it’s full of amazing local business and gems. From restaurants to gift shops to fun activities and more, here are a few of my coups de coeur.
Alice + Brohm serves the best ice cream. It’s made of fruit right before your eyes! Take a picture before digging in - it’s a full experience. They even have scoops for dogs! It’s the perfect stop when you are craving something sweet, refreshing and delicious.
Sunflower Bakery & Cafe has it all - the best coffee in town (49th Parallel), donuts and pastries, delicious sourdough, tasty lunches, and great staff. If you’re looking for a place to eat in Squamish, this one is simply a must.
Nootka + Sea: Apothecary & West Coast Goods is THE place to go if you’re looking for the perfect quirky little something. This local apothecary sells aromatherapy and self-care goodies, home essentials, plants, and more. Their amazing skincare products are made from local plants and flowers and are my absolute favorite. The candles and bath products are also to die for. You can’t leave this eclectic local shop without a bouquet of dried wildflowers!
Alex Negru is an adventurer, mother, doula, expert in prenal and postnatayoga, and all around amazing person! You can reach her on her IG @alexnegruyoga or email her at alexnegru03@gmail.com.
Totes Magotes part 2
I read an article recently about Tote Bags in London and how there was definitely some that showed you were more ‘in’ than others. Daunt Books was on top (I actually think I own a Daunt Books tote - thanks Mom) but others were coming in hard.
What I realized when researching tote bags is that most are not sold online. You truly have to go to the shop or business in order to buy one. I think this makes the humble tote one of the few things that you can really use to show off a little bit about who you are and what you support. There’s no faking it. Examples of totes (amongst many many many I suspect) that you can only buy in person are my Tony Bolloni tote and one that my gym is selling.
What do you think the top Montreal tote is?
Here are a few of my faves (that you can get online)
Café St-Henri, Café Olimpico, Melk, Dispatch
But I would say the aware for top Tote Bag in Montreal goes too…. CCA! I always see it around town!
I’ve tried Perogie Lili and as someone who is half Ukrainian and has grown up eating her fair share of body weight in perogies, these are the best I’ve ever had (sorry baba). The dough is almost melt in the mouth. I think they must be made fresh because the texture is so different (in a good way). They do not sell frozen packs of perogies (I know I found it hard to believe too). Here’s a La Presse article too.
